What Are Dentures Anyway?

Dentures are artificial teeth that are worn when you’ve lost some or all of your natural teeth. There are three different types of dentures to choose from, based on your needs and preferences:

  • Removable Partial Dentures – These dentures are a great option for patients who are missing some teeth, but still have plenty of natural teeth.
  • Fixed Partial Dentures – These are sometimes also called permanent bridges. Unlike the removable partial dentures, this option stays permanently fixed in your mouth. We use a combination of crowns and sculpted synthetic material, so no one can tell the difference between your artificial teeth and your natural ones!
  • Complete Dentures – These are for patients who have lost all of their upper or lower teeth. Complete dentures also have the option of being fixed in place using implant stabilization.

How Do I Get My Dentures?

At the Center for Dental Excellence, we begin the dentures process with an examination during your Consultation. At this time, we make sure you’re a strong candidate for dentures. We’ll review your options and answer any questions you may have.

While our treatment is customized to each patient’s unique needs, the overall process of getting your custom-fitted dentures typically follows these steps: First, we take an impression of your mouth. During subsequent visits, we take additional impressions with increasing levels of detail. These detailed impressions ensure that your dentures will fit you properly and comfortably.

Next, we create a prototype of your dentures, which is used to fine-tune your personalized dentures for the best possible fit and appearance. The prototype will give you a sneak preview of your new, improved smile!

Finally, your dentures will be custom-made, and you’ll get to wear them home! We will see you back for follow-up visits to adjust your dentures as needed in order to ensure the best and most comfortable fit possible. Regardless of the type of dentures that you choose, you will never experience a period of time without teeth.

At The Center for Dental Excellence, nothing makes us happier than improving the lives of our patients.

Dentures FAQs

How do I know which type of denture is right for me?

It depends on how many teeth you’re missing and what you want your daily life to look like. If you still have plenty of natural teeth, a removable partial denture might be the simplest option. If you’d rather not deal with something you take in and out, a fixed partial denture stays in place permanently.

If you’ve lost all your upper or lower teeth, complete dentures are the standard choice, and you can also stabilize them with implants for a more secure fit. During your consultation, we’ll review your options and help you choose what fits your needs and budget.

Will my dentures look natural, or will people be able to tell?

That’s one of the biggest concerns patients bring up, and it’s a fair one. Our dentures are made from high-quality materials by skilled dental artists who match the color, shape, and size of your teeth to your face. The goal is a smile that looks like yours, not like a set of artificial teeth. Most patients tell us that friends and family can’t tell the difference, and that alone makes a huge difference in how they feel.

How long does it take to get dentures?

The process takes several visits, but it’s spread out over a few weeks so we can get everything right. We start with an exam and an initial impression of your mouth. Then we take more detailed impressions over a couple of visits, create a prototype for you to preview, and finally craft your custom dentures. You’ll never go without teeth during the process, which is a common concern for many patients. We’ll walk you through the full timeline during your consultation.

Do dentures hurt?

New dentures can feel a little awkward at first while your mouth adjusts, but they shouldn’t cause real pain. Some patients experience mild soreness or irritation in the first week or two, which usually goes away as your gums get used to the fit. We include follow-up visits so we can adjust your dentures as needed until they feel comfortable. If something doesn’t feel right, tell us, because a small adjustment often makes a big difference.

What if I’m not happy with my dentures?

We stand behind our work with a full satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not completely happy with your new teeth, we ask that you give us a chance to make things right. That might mean adjusting the fit, reshaping part of the denture, or remaking it if necessary. We’d rather take the time to fix a problem than have you leave feeling anything less than confident in your smile.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Yes, though it takes some practice at first. We recommend starting with softer foods and gradually working your way back to your normal diet over the first few weeks. Once you’re used to them, most patients can eat a wide range of foods without issues. If you choose implant-stabilized dentures, you’ll have even more chewing power and stability, which makes eating feel closer to what it was with natural teeth.

Will dentures change how I talk?

There’s usually a short adjustment period where your speech might sound a little different. That’s completely normal, and it passes quickly as your tongue and mouth get used to the new shape. Reading out loud for a few minutes each day can help you adapt faster. Most patients are speaking normally within a week or two, and some don’t notice any change at all.

What are implant-stabilized dentures, and are they worth it?

Implant-stabilized dentures use a small number of dental implants to anchor a full denture. That means no slipping, no adhesive, and much more chewing power than a traditional removable denture. They cost more upfront, but many patients find the added stability and confidence well worth it. If you’re interested, we can evaluate whether you’re a candidate during your consultation.

Do you offer payment plans for dentures?

Yes, we do. We know that cost is a real concern for many patients, and we don’t want that to stand in the way of getting your smile back. We offer 0% financing plans, accept all major credit cards, and can also help you use a health savings or flex spending account if you have one. Our financial coordinators will walk you through every option so you can pick what works best for your budget.

Am I too old for dentures?

Not at all. Patients of all ages get dentures, and there’s no upper age limit for treatment. What matters is your overall health, your gum condition, and what you want for your smile. Many of our patients are in their 60s, 70s, and beyond, and they’re thrilled with the results. If you’re wondering whether dentures are right for you, the best next step is a consultation.
